
Who we are Afghan Literacy Organization (ALO) is a registered non-profit, non-political, and non-governmental organization that has been working to transform and uplift Afghan civil society since 1995. ALO was established in response to the urgent needs of vulnerable Afghan refugees and internally displaced families affected by the civil strife and displacement. With a focus on education, health, human rights, and community development, ALO aims to empower Afghan communities through sustainable programs and services. Our Vision We envision a stable, peaceful, and democratic society in Afghanistan where every individual is inspired and equipped to bring positive change to their communities. Our Mission Our mission is to facilitate sustainable social development by mobilizing and building community capacities through civic education, training, advocacy, and technical assistance. ALO is committed to sharing research, experiences, and learning to actively influence positive changes at all levels. What We Do We work across Afghanistan with a focus on the following program areas: Education, Basic Health, & Environment: Providing formal, non-formal, and vocational education, especially focusing on female education in rural areas, as well as promoting primary health care and environmental awareness. Peace, Democracy, & Human Rights: Strengthening civil society to promote transparency, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable groups including women, children, and people with disabilities. Emergency Relief & Rehabilitation: Providing timely support during natural disasters, conflicts, and crises, including food distribution, medical assistance, and rehabilitation. Women Empowerment & Livelihood Development: Promoting gender equality, skill enhancement, and enterprise development to ensure women have equal rights and opportunities in Afghan society.
